Well I'm back from the Big Apple, always an interesting place to visit but July is not the best time. Thankfully the hotel's AC worked well enough. When you left the room and entered the hallway you got a taste of what was in store outside. I stayed in Manhattan the entire trip. I can't say its typical for the entire city but it is what I saw.
I've never been a fan of cities and would dislike living in one. Too many people, too much noise, crowded, dirty, no space... the usual complaints of the rural visitors to the city. It does have its good points though. The museums, Marshall chess club, monuments and buildings. I worked every day so I didn't get to see much but I did catch the fireworks on the 4th. I had to endure a few rain showers but I've been wet before in much worse weather and it was a good show.
A few personal observations on NYC that add to its character. People seem more fit and less inclined to being overweight. I attribute that to the fact that driving anywhere is almost impossible and where possible very expensive. Getting from A to B is mainly about walking. Eating out is also very expensive but the portions tend to be very generous. On the other hand there seemed to be a higher proportion of smokers.
Well now that I'm back I hope to get on track and post more in line with the original plan of this blog. Best laid plans and all that.
